Thoughts on listening to users

About

This blog is the general outlet for  feature announcements for TryMyUi, and general musings by its creators, Sani and Farhad.

TryMyUi is a service that enables you to essentially get into your users’ heads as they navigate your website and try to accomplish various tasks.  We do this by assembling and training a group of testers, who you can ask to peruse your website and perform various tasks.  The testers are trained to verbalize their thoughts as they go about this, and we record their screen and voices during the process and provide it to you promptly.

We created TryMyUi because of our needs to understand your user base. We had created a website, Bustameal to help our spouses, and primary caregivers (primarily Moms) in general, addressing that vexing problem of what to cook tonight.  We believe in user-centered design and development, and it didn’t take an epiphany for us to realize that a couple of guys sitting in a sailboat coding all day may not fully understand the point of view of this target audience.  More generally, we humbly acknowledge that our mental models for the information architecture and the approach we use to solve problems are likely quite different from that of our target audience.  So we  spent a fair bit of time sitting with our friends and seeing how they navigated the site, and were (predictably) often surprised by their interpretation of our visual cues and terminology.  While the exercise was valuable, even essential, recruiting users from our pool of friends, arranging interviews with them, and going to meet them were all  very time-consuming.  With TryMyUi we’re trying to simplify the process and make it more efficient.
